Picking a country

The first thing to do is to pick a country. The two ports of call are: the world map of Latelen and the Registration thread.

Things to consider:

  • Do I want a large country or a small country?
  • What are my new neighbours like?
  • What is the geography/climate of my country like?
  • What sort of relations can arise from my choice?
  • Can I keep up with the country I have chosen?

Migrating from Otshem, Qitharan or Kensilla

If your country was on one of the old continents, you now have new things to consider. Please check these and update accordingly:

  • New climates
  • New geography
  • New neighbours, therefore new history
  • New diplomacy
  • Potentially new language minorities

Also please check

  • Deals and history with inactive countries, they are no longer part of the game.

If your country is missing and wish to be part of the planet again, please:

  • Express your interest in a new or the same territory on the Registration thread
  • Express your desire to continue being an active member of conplanet.

Lastly, please update your maps!!

Initial planning

Here's a list of things to get a basic country functioning:

  • 1. Create the page!
    • That can be done by typing your country name into the search box and clicking the create page link that comes up.
    • If your country uses special characters, I would recommend creating a redirect. For example, if your country is called Fállön, create a page called Fallon also and use the following to redirect: #REDIRECT Fállön.
    • Create a flag!
    • Create your country info box, copy this from another person's country and edit your values in.
    • Add the following to the bottom of your page so it can be found: Countries of Latelen
  • 2. Set up templates

Country data templates

We use a convenience system in this wiki that allows us to refer to a general country ID and have it be replaced by a country name. For example:

  • Country 6 → Nunshavi
  • Country 6 → Flag of Nunshavi Country 6
  • Country 6 → Nunshavi

Once you know the ID number of your country, you need to move that temporary data to your own page. Go to the page Template:Country data %ID%, where %ID% is the ID number of your country. Click the Move tab at the top of the page. For a new page name, replace the ID number of the country with your new country name.

This process will set up a page redirect, so that people can still refer to your country as "Country 6", for example, instead of having to use the country name.

Next, we need to change the actual data for this page. You should see some code like this in your newly moved page:

{{ {}
| alias           = Country 6
| shortname alias = Country 6
| flag alias      = Unknown_flag.png
| countryname = {Country 6}
| size        = {}
| name        = {}
| variant     = {}
| sport       = {}
}}

The alias, shortname alias, flag alias, and countryname fields will be different for each country ID. Change the %FullName% to your country's full name, %ShortName% to your country's short name, and %Flag% to the filename of the flag that you uploaded. Save the page, and you're finished!

Creating content

This is the biggest part of your country's preparation, and it's very important!

This part of the process is very free, but please follow a few guidelines:

  • Wikipedia's Manual of Style is your best friend for editing reference. Most of the rules are intuitive, and those that must be followed are simple and easy to remember. Don't worry: if you mix something up occasionally a staff member will gladly correct your mistake.
  • Please use your best grammar - write as if you were writing for an encyclopedia.
  • If you are developing a page that has a preset template, please use that as a base to remain consistent.
  • Capitalize carefully. Proper nouns and the first letter of a label should always be capitalized in page titles and section headings. All other common nouns and other parts of speech should not be capitalized.
    • You may use this page as a reference. Notice the title is "Getting started", and one of the section headings is "Creating a country".
    • For a more detailed report, you can reference Wikipedia's capitalization guide.
  • Watch other users' pages so you can learn the basic process of page development.

Page outline

There is a template you can use here to get your country started. Just click "Edit" and copy and paste it to your page. There are notes (denoted like: <!-- this is a note -->) to help you understand the parts of the page.

Categories for pages

Continuity

To ensure that all the stories and histories match up with one another and don't contradict each other, make sure you talk to the owner of an affected country before stating an event happened in the past. When something can be reached between you lot, you can post it on the Timeline page and mention it on your own pages too. Make use of the forums and the skype chat to sort these issues.

When you invent a new event you need to also add it to the timeline when it's mentioned on your own page. Even if it is your own event, others might be able to derive something from it.
